Rockaway Waterfront Alliance Competes For A Greater Vision

Last week students in RWA’s urban planning program presented their projects for a “Greater Rockaway” vision completion. Over the past three months students from Scholars’ Academy have been working with RWA Program Coordinator Elizabeth Manclark on researching sites throughout the peninsula to redevelop as resources for the community.

The students collected data, photos and built 3-d models along with sketches of their designs. The final presentations were exhibited at an RAA gallery in Fort Tilden to a jury panel made up of both local residents and professional planners, designers and artists. The students presented their ideas which ranged from tea gardens, eco parks, dinosaur causeways and “green” hotels in some of the Peninsula’s most neglected areas.

Barbara and Mickey Cohen, who were two of the judges, commented on the professionalism of the students and how clearly they presented their ideas. The ideas were inspirational to all who were there to see how the ideas of local youth could someday impact the greater Rockaway peninsula.

Many of the students’ families and others came to support the students’ work and took part in the reception and awards ceremony afterwards.
