Rockaway Walks Starts Fifth Year June 11
Exercise is one of the best ways to keep fit. With that in mind, the Fifth Annual Rockaway Walks campaign is about to begin. After four years of success, Councilman James Sanders Jr. announced last week that his office will once again lead the way in a joint venture with such Rockaway facilities as the Addabbo Family Health Center, Peninsula Hospital Center and St. John’s Episcopal Hospital.
“Getting started with an exercise regimen is the hardest part of leading a healthier lifestyle,” said Sanders. “Once you start, however, you get hooked.”
The Rockaway Walks health initiative, which was co-founded by Sanders’ chief of staff, Donovan Richards, was first started in June 2007. It consisted of bi-monthly weigh-ins and walks on the boardwalk.
“I never imagined when we started Rockaway Walks five years ago that it would be as successful as it has become,” said Richards. “This is government at its finest, truly working directly with the community to make a tangible difference in the lives of real people. Healthy living starts with small easy steps, and that’s what Rockaway Walks is all about.”
The program will take place at 8 a.m. every Saturday morning during the summer, beginning June 11 and ending August 27. The program is supported by Affinity Health Plan; City of New York Parks and Recreation; Modell’s; Office Max Impress; Dr. Camille Phillippe, Family Practice; Stop and Shop; The Wave; and York College.
