Guilty Plea For Child Porn Ex-Cop
A retired cop from South Ozone Park has pleaded guilty to child pornography charges and faces up to 10 years in prison when sentenced next month, Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown announced this week.
Police arrested Matthew Fanning, 48, in 2008 after detectives seized three computers containing child pornography from his girlfriend’s Rockaway apartment. His girlfriend, whose name was not released by police, reportedly lives in Rockaway Beach with her fourteenyear old daughter. Police say that Fanning often spent weekends at the apartment.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of promoting a sexual performance by a child and is scheduled for sentencing on June 9. According to the guilty plea, Fanning obtained the child porn from the former file sharing network, Limewire, on two separate occasions with videos featuring a three-year-old girl and a ten-year-old performing sexual acts.
According to court papers, the child pornography images were traced back to his South Ozone Park home and his girlfriend’s Rockaway apartment. According to the guilty plea, the videos were downloaded in October 2006 and May 2007. The investigation was conducted with the help of Delaware County, Pennsylvania law enforcements agencies. Upon sentencing, Fanning will be required to register with the New York State Sex Offender registry.
“This case is disturbing on several levels, not the least of which is that the defendant is a retired police officer who was sworn to protect and serve,” DA Brown said in a statement. “Instead he has admitted to having the most vile pornography on his computer.”
