Spectacular would be a good word to describe the striped bass fishing in Jamaica Bay this past week. Aboard the charter boats in the Karen Ann fleet, daily limits of big bass was the norm. Captain Frank has also been doing some special night and afternoon trips and they too have been very productive. But it has been that way for most anglers putting in the time.

Lou, John and Emilio on Saturday evening limited out with some big bass all caught on live bunker. Big bluefish have also invaded the bay and are caught in the mix. At times it’s blitz like fishing.

Bass are spread out throughout the entire bay from as far back as Inwood, up through Canarsie around the bend toward Mill Basin and right into the inlet. Quality fish and plenty of them, so now would be the time to wet a line.

Meanwhile fluke are appearing and they too are showing up in their usual haunts throughout the bay. Bucktails and light action tackle seems to be producing well.

Outside in the ocean, bass as well as bluefish are being caught along the inlet, but that changes daily. Occasionally the fish pop up off Rockaway and sometimes down south off Jersey. The head boats out of Sheepshead are keeping tabs on them. So even though the weather feels like March the fish are right on schedule. Until the next tide …
