Wave Wrong On Bund

Dear Editor,

Your photo caption on the “Old Rockaway Photos” page in the May 20 edition gave a particularly misleading and incorrect impression of the “Arion Sanger Bund” c.1902 photo. Your comment also wrongly slights the First Congregational Church in Rockaway.

A Sanger Bund is a German Choir. “Sanger Bund” literally translates to “Choral Society.” Those pictured are choir members. Traditional German choirs known as Sanger Bunds continue to exist throughout the US and around the world today. To insinuate that the First Congregational Church harbored a “Bund” that became “pro- German” during the war that was thus “banned” is ridiculous.

During World War II Americans of German and Japanese descent in the United States were falsely presumed guilty, suspect and un-American, resulting in the outrage of Japanese internment camps and the unfair ostracizing of Americans of German and Japanese descent as well as all things German and Japanese during that period.

For The Wave to implicate the First Congregation Church as guilty by association of harboring and “being affiliated with” a pro-German group that was banned during WWI is mindlessly offensive, objectionable and historically inaccurate.
