The Good Samaritan

Dear Editor:

On Wednesday, May 4, 2011, my four-year-old autistic son wandered from home towards the beach. Upon discovering he was missing, my husband ran towards the beach praying that the worst had not happened as I stayed with my two other children. Fortunately, a Good Samaritan saw our child wandering, pulled over, and tried to help him find us.

Seeing the child respond “Daddy!” to my husband’s scream for his son, she returned him safely into the arm of his father. We wish more people were aware of the unfortunate tendency for autistic (and other) children to wander off and knew how to react the same as she did.

Typical of the Rockaway

Typical of the Rockaway community. I always said that if you have to lose a child, the best place in the world is The Rockaways, because somebody will make sure that child is well taken care of and returned to its parents safely. WNF
