Varnell Caligiuri, a longtime Rockaway resident, died May 14 at Peninsula Hospital Center.
Caligiuri was born in Hollis, Oklahoma on April 24, 1924. In 1943 she married William Caligiuri of Rockaway Beach. They resided in Rockaway Beach together for 68 years. She was a waitress for the former Breaker’s Restaurant on Beach 116 Street. Following its closing, she became the head waitress of catering for the former Washington Hotel at Beach 125 Street. She retired at the age of 73.
Caligiuri was preceded in death by her husband, William, and daughter, Irene Reda.
She is survived by her sisters, Lavada Dockins of Roswell, New Mexico and Linnie Jo Coran of Conway, Arkansas; brother, Lloyd, of El Dorado Springs, Missouri; sisters-in-law, Catherine Caligiuri and Jean McKenna; nephews, James (Nancy) and William Caligiuri, James and Joseph McKenna, Edward (Hilda) and Eugene DiResto; nieces, Patricia (John) Cinque, Susan (Paul) McQuaid, Gina (Anthony) Markle, Lynn DiResto and Patricia Buckley; and a host of great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home, Rockaway Beach. A funeral mass took place at St. Rose of Lima Church, Rockaway Beach. Interment followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Inwood, New York.
