Kosmos Soccer Teams Celebrate Winning Weekend On The Road
The Kosmos Techno girls team won their first game of the season beating Manhasset by a score of 4-0. Scoring on Saturday was lead by Maria Di Carlo (2), Katie Sammon, and Lauren Marten.
Those goals were complemented by 3 perfect assists from Maria Di Carlo, Nicole Gibson and Gwyn McGee. Di Carlo’s first goal was off a direct penalty kick opening the scoring. Erin Kennedy played right wing but was shut down. She stepped back to midfield assisting Marten and McGee to shut down Manhasset. The midfield was held strong again by Gwyn McGee and Carli Bopp with the defense of Devin Gavigan and Alex Berman only allowing goalie Rose Fay to touch the ball twice.
The Kosmos GU9 Atalanta team had a big day Sunday at John Dewey High School in Brooklyn. They defeated the Brooklyn Italians AS Roma by a score of 11-0.
Atalanta got its first goal two minutes into the game by Maggie Murphy. It was followed quickly by two goals from Katie Hughes; Emma Baldwin scored from outside the box and Taylor Bryan had a goal as she rushed in from her left fullback position in the first half.
The scoring continued throughout both halves with goals by Niamh Gormley, Victoria Catalano, Sydney Urban, Sabrina McCarthy and Nikki Cimino. Vivianna Moore received a penalty kick after being tripped from behind. After her penalty kick there was no stopping her from getting the goal she deserved and ending the team’s day with goal 11. The team was aggressive offensively and excellent defense was displayed by fullbacks Katie Roventini and Sophia Edri, limiting the Brooklyn Italians to very few shots on goal.
Sunday was a big day for the undefeated GU13 Kosmos Athena team. The day started very early with a LiveSpot Long Island Cup game against Lynbrook/ East Rockaway Lizards in Lynbrook. The wings got the girls off to a big start in the first half as Shannon Rochelle scored soon, followed by a flying header into the back of the net by Ryan Ward, goal two. Center fullbacks Morgan Koenig and Teresa Gallagher shut down the Lizards offense leaving them scoreless in the first half.
The second half was a little more contentious with the two teams trading goals. Ryan Ward started the second half with her second goal, but the Lizards quickly followed with a penalty kick into the lower left corner. Striker Emily Carlton retaliated by taking the goalie on 1 versus 1 and capitalized on a breakaway goal to keep Athena up by three. Lynbrook scored a second goal on a direct kick just outside the box, ending the game with a 4-2 victory for the Kosmos.
After the first game, the team quickly jumped into their cars and headed over to Rockville Center for their regular league game. Tired, the girls started slowly, giving up the first goal to the RVC Rockets. The game turned around when injured outside fullback Rory Kirk blasted one into the back of the net from well outside the box, tying the game 1-1. Emily Carlton quickly got into the fun by putting two more into the back of the net giving the Kosmos a 2-point lead at halftime.
The second half saw both teams battling it out with the Kosmos putting seven shots on net while goalie Kelly Davan did her share by making seven saves. Outside fullback Kyla Tacapino did a fantastic job aggressively challenging the Rockets forwards for possession of the ball. Midfielders Hayley Urban, Jackie Gallagher and Samantha Rom covered a lot of field to disrupt the Rockets’ transition.
