Destructive Storm Takes Down Four Poles



(Top) A quick-moving storm that held high winds, thunder and lightning, took down four telephone poles across the street from PS 225 at Beach 110 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard just as the school was dismissing at 4 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, April 28. Several automobiles, reportedly owned by teachers, were damaged and destroyed by the falling pole. One eyewitness said that lightening hit the pole, while another said that the wind took down the pole. A LIPA official at the scene said that it would take some time to determine the cause of the falling pole. One woman was slightly injured when she was grazed by the falling pole, officials say.
