We Need Lifeguards
The following letter was sent to Liam Kavanagh, the operations manager for the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. Dear Mr. Kavanagh,
Please make sure that the residents of Far Rockaway have enough lifeguards and accessible beaches this summer. Last season, piping plovers were more important than young children and their parents, senior citizens, and city dwellers looking to cool off at Far Rockaway’s public beaches.
The birds had a cordoned-off area for six city blocks from Beach 23 Street to Beach 29 Street and staff to watch them and their nesting areas. Meanwhile, New York City residents and their visitors were denied swimming in the ocean from Beach 17 Street to Beach 29 Street because there were no lifeguards.
Our neighborhood of Far Rockaway has more residents than Breezy Point, Neponsit, Belle Harbor, Rockaway Park and Rockaway Beach, and we want to make certain that we get our fair share of lifeguards and open beaches this year. It’s the right thing to do.
