BCD Getting Median Facelift
The section of median separating the two directions of Beach Channel Drive in Rockaway Park will soon get a new look that includes new cement work, greenery and trees, according to Community Board 14.
The project, spearheaded by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, will renovate the median between Rockaway Freeway and Beach 116 Street. Among the highlights of the project the median will receive new concrete pavement, curbs, shrubs and trees.
The project is expected to begin in the next two weeks, pending a permit by the Department of Transportation, and take about 14 days to complete, according to a spokesperson for the Parks department.
“We asked for one lane to be open in each direction,” Community Board 14 District Manager Jonathan Gaska said, in the event any street closures must take effect.
Last time Beach Channel Drive was shut down in this section for milling and paving it caused gridlock along the peninsula as the entire section of Beach Channel Drive was shut down. However, Gaska doesn’t anticipate a project of this magnitude requiring that kind of closure and inconvenience.
