The Inner Voice

Commentary by Marilyn Gelfand

As holidays have just passed, it is important to remember to ask ourselves if we had fun in our way. Time goes by fast. Did the holiday seem enjoyable and did you celebrate the way you would like to? Inside you will feel so good that you gave yourself this pleasure. You can always say, “Next year we’ll go back to the old way.”

Did you have a thick skin and not get offended if a family member or friend said something you disagreed with? Different points of view are the variety of life. Enjoy these moments, too, as a chance for us all to be comfortable being ourselves.

You may feel like you are able to express what you feel if you allow others the same chance.

If there were some people you had to be with who are not pleasant, did you remind yourself ahead of time to not allow yourself to get bent out of shape by these people?

Most people’s unpleasantness can be predicted, so it is important to do advanced readiness so you can ignore or have an appropriate response prepared.

It is so important not to just be a workhorse or live by the values of others or what is expected of you. The more self-acceptance and self-love we have, the more we allow ourselves to enjoy life in our own fashion.

Think about what makes you happy, and put in as much as you can.

We can’t control all aspects of life, but certainly there is time when the focus is on our own happiness to include a lot of what is meaningful and enriching to ourselves.
