Gather ’Round The Maypole

“Big Catch,” oil on canvas by Maureen McGuire, on view in “Windows” at RoCA, Fort Tilden. “Big Catch,” oil on canvas by Maureen McGuire, on view in “Windows” at RoCA, Fort Tilden. Well, OK, there is no maypole, but May 1 is a big day at RAA, Fort Tilden. In sTudio 7 Gallery a watercolor demonstration by Terry Ferrier commences at 2 p.m. Ferrier, a respected artist and art instructor, is one of the members of the Brooklyn Watercolor Society participating in the sparkling exhibit, “Glass and Water II,” now in sTudio 7 through May 8. The amazing invitational exhibit juxtaposes the talents and transparencies of BWS and the RAA Glass Artists, and will act as a backdrop to Ferrier’s demo. In sTudio 6 Gallery is “By the Sea, by the Beautiful Sea,” a presentation by Bernie Feuer using images of Old Rockaway to tell the often surprising story of the beginnings of our Rockaway peninsula. Feuer goes on at 1 p.m. Then, the Writers Group meeting is being held from 4-6 p.m. in sTudio 6. Always interesting and enlightening, these meetings provide an opportunity to hear talented developing and veteran scribes read their own original works in a variety of genres and styles and to read your own work to a receptive, insightful audience of kindred souls.

Presenters Wanted: The RAA is drawing up its General Meeting Presenters list and looking for speakers, artists and performers to talk about, demonstrate or otherwise bring to life some topic related to the arts, history, nature, etc. These can be related to the specific theme of an upcoming exhibition or can explore in any direction.

If you are interested or know someone who could do a great presentation, send an information e-mail to both Dan Guarino at Twcgxwgj@aol.com and Denis Macrae at denisthebirdman@gmail.com. Let’s hear from you!

Calls to Artists:

RAA exhibits: “Tomorrow’s Art Today,” poses the question, “What is ‘modern art’ in the 21st century?” Artists are challenged to push the bounds of form, format, color, contour, construction, text and context. You are invited to find the answer to the question in new and exciting ways.

“Nature” invites artists to go wild and au naturelle (sort of). Animals domesticated or a la jungle; real or surreal; imagined or pedantic. All are welcome to enter the RAA gallery. All mediums are also welcome (even Medium Rayah, who has a nifty portrait of “Redhead and Tuxedo Cat”).

Submission deadline: April 29, 2011. Hurry while there is still seating.

The Salt Marsh Alliance is a not-forprofit in Brooklyn that invites all RAA artists to exhibit artwork in a two-day event, May 14 and 15, to support the Salt Marsh Nature Center on Avenue U in Brooklyn. If interested, contact Ellen Hoyt at 718-338-7281.

RAA’s Darkroom is now open for use by RAA members on Tuesdays, 7-9 p.m. Fee per usage is $20.
