Former Resident

Jeanette Wheeler Coles, a former Rockaway resident, died March 10.

Coles was born on November 11, 1932 in Baltimore, Maryland and later moved to Rockaway Beach. She was a community activist working with former Mayor John Lindsay to form a task force in the Rockaway community. She was also the assistant director at the Manpower Agency, field director of Rockaway Home Attendant Service and later worked part time for State Farm Insurance Company.

Coles was preceded in death by her parents, Daisy Mae Gentry and Profit Sherman; and daughter, Rita.

She is survived by her children, Michael, Celeste, Lisa, Allan and Warren; stepchildren, Melanie, Sharon and Mark; brother-in-law, Charles Wheeler; and grandchildren, Clifford, Raymond, Ruqquyah, Tressa, Brandon, Joy and Make Jr.; and three great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral arrangements remained private.
