H.S. Roundup: Stars Shine At Mayor’s Cup

Photo by William Thomas Two Rockaway stars were featured in the first annual NYC Mayor’s Cup high school all-star basketball showcase at City College last Sunday afternoon.

Beach Channel/Channel View senior forward Kevin Marmlejos scored 16 points for the Bronx/Queens/Staten Island team as they were defeated 110- 106 by the Brooklyn/Manhattan team.

Marmolejos, a four-year player for the Dolphins, averaged 15 points per game this past season.

Scholars’ Academy senior guard Rebecca Moers played for the Bronx- Queens-Staten Island team as they defeated the Brooklyn-Manhattan squad, 73-71. The Bronx team was cocoached by Scholars’ coach Janet Kleiner and Juan Gonzalez, who led Wings Academy to the PSAL ‘A’ championship.

Tennis

The Beach Channel girls tennis team improved to 4-0 in the PSAL ‘C1’ Division as they defeated Flushing 5-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

Latina Khalil, Pamela Hernandez and Shadei Gordon each won in singles matches for the first place Lady Dolphins. The doubles matches were won by the pair of Anuradha Singh and Felicia Owolabi, along with Ivonne Aguiar and Shadei Gordon.

The Beach Channel boys team is off to a nice start despite losing 3-2 to Flushing High School on Monday afternoon. The team is in first place in the ‘C1’ Division with a 4-1 record.

Lacrosse

Whitney Brown scored four goals to lead Beach Channel/Channel View to a 7-5 victory over Curtis on Tuesday.

The Lady Dolphins (4-2) will face the top two teams in the Championship Division at home this week. Beach Channel will take on Midwood (6-0) on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Tottenville (6-0) will travel to Beach Channel on Thursday at 5 p.m.
