Active Soccer Weekend For Rockaway Kosmos

It was a very busy weekend for the Nikh U9 girls team that is playing in the boys division of the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League. They experienced a hard loss on Saturday to Staten Island’s soccer ABC team.

Sunday was another story against the New York Soccer Stars premier team. The first half ended with Nikh down 3-0. The Nikh team looked like a new team in the second half. Nikh pounded three goals into the net as Niahm Gormley and Jillian McCabe helped to bring the score to 3-3. Unfortunately, with two minutes left, NY Soccer Stars scored a goal to end the game with a 4-3 win. It was a very tough loss for the team.

The littlest Kosmos team had their first soccer game Saturday in Merrick, Long Island. This team is made up of five, six and seven-year-olds.

They had a great beginning and their coaches are looking forward to their development. Claudia Kelly made the only goal and Timothy David and Nicholas Abernathy worked very hard as goalies.

Sunday was a beautiful day to play soccer at Kissena Park. Kosmos Atalanta girls U11 started the day by playing a rough and tough game against the Brooklyn Patriots Attack team. Rhiannon Gormley scored a goal for the Kosmos, and the game was tied until the Attack scored to win the game, 2-1.

The Kosmos Atalanta girls U9 played a great game against the Staten Island Alliance Ravens. With five players down, Atalanta GU9 pounded goal after goal in, winning the game, 6-0. Goals were made by Vivianna Moore, Sydney Urban, Taylor Bryan, Sabrina McCarthy and Maggie Murphy.

The Kosmos U12 girls team tied their second game of the season by a score of 2-2 against the Merrick Angels in the LIJSL. A solid pass from Nicole Gibson from midfield to Kelly Santiago at left wing started the drive. Santiago took the ball towards the corner, beat her player and slipped back inside. She passed the ball to Maria Di Carlo, who slid to her right at the top of the 18- yard box and blasted the ball past the goalie cutting Merrick’s lead to 2-1.

The girls came out on fire in the second half and caught Merrick off guard. The majority of the 30 minutes was played in Merrick’s half of the field. Tremendous defense by Carli Bopp and Devin Gavigan shut down Merrick’s attack. The midfield led by Gwyn McGee, Lauren Marten, Erin Kennedy and Nicole Gibson helped keep the team in the attacking side of the Merrick field.

The passing and movement on the field by the forwards Maria Di Carlo, Katie Sammon, Molly Breslin and Kelly Santiago caused Merrick to not know which way they needed to defend.

The tying goal came when McGee pulled a “Diego Maradona” type move on her opponent on the right side. She made a solid pass to Breslin, who beat her defender deep to the corner and swung a perfect pass to Di Carlo just inside the box. Di Carlo then chipped the ball over the goalie tying up the game at 2-2. Despite the two goals scored by the opponent, goalkeeper Rose Fay had another solid performance in net.

Kosmos Athena GU-13 went on the road this weekend, for their first away game and had a decisive victory against the Garden City Force, 2-0. Notable in this game were the 2 goals by Emily Carlton and the strong defensive play by defenders Tes Gallagher, Morgan Koenig, Rory Kirk, Kayla Takapino and Jackie Gallagher, leaving few scoring opportunities, which were easily stopped by goalie Kelly Davan.
