Expresses Significant Disappointment
I am writing to express my significant disappointment in the closure of the Fort Tilden Post Office. What has occurred is a prime example of government ineptitude, arrogance and extreme indifference to the very people government is supposed to serve.
The facts were rather simple and I am still baffled as to how the government botched this.
For the past 32 years I have operated the Post Office contract station in Fort Tilden, NY. The contract had always been at a modest amount but I enjoyed the ability to work close to my children and grandchildren. I also enjoyed the relationships I formed with my many loyal customers.
The people of Rockaway benefited in receiving courteous, reliable postal service. The Post Office benefited by receiving significant income at very little cost. Gateway carried no real burden as the Post Office was located in an unwanted former Army building.
In fact, many of my regular customers were Gateway and other Federal employees.
For months Gateway, the Post Office and the Congressman were providing either conflicting directions or no directions at all. Then, without warning, a few weeks ago Gateway sent an eviction notice. The Congressman then communicated his support for closing the Post Office at a Town Hall meeting, his office never having notified me.
Now the Post Office is closed and to what benefit? Postal service for many in Rockaway will become much more burdensome. The Post Office will lose income.
Gateway will have yet another unused building. At 63 years old I am left with no income, nothing to show for a lifetime of service.
I am sure that each respective wing of the government will try to justify its actions, pass blame to others or claim it “had” to take this action. Are our federal employees that uninformed that they reach such ridiculous conclusions? Or are our laws that poorly written? Or are the Post Office, Gateway and Congress so detached that they don’t care either way?
However the government likes to view how this happened, there is one inescapable truth: the government, our government, failed my family and the people of Rockaway.
