Big A Racino To Slot An Early Opening

By Howard Schwach

Rockaway gamblers who have been waiting eagerly for the opening of a Video Lottery Terminal (VLT) Racino at the aging Aqueduct Racetrack in South Ozone Park will only have to wait for late summer to take Cross Bay Boulevard to get to a gambling facility.

Resort World NY, the developer of the new gambling facility, announced last weekend that the construction is three months ahead of schedule and that the 2,500 VLT facility will be completely up and running by August.

The original plans had called for 1,600 VLT machines to be in place by next winter and the remainder to be open by summer of 2012.

At a news conference late last year, Genting New York, part of a giant Malaysian-based casino and cruise ship operator, announced it had delivered its upfront licensing fee of $380 million — five days ahead of the official deadline. Tutor Perini, the construction company, said the construction costs of the 4,500 video-slot-machine facility will be $241 million.

“Genting is excited to have crossed the finish line and will now quickly get to work building a first-class casino that will not only showcase the best in gaming and entertainment, but will result in more than 2,000 jobs and significant recurring revenue for New York State,” said Mike Speller, president of Genting New York, in a statement.

Genting plans to open a 200-seat high-end Chinese restaurant, a sports bar with a 280-seat lounge, several buffet style restaurants, and even a water show.
