Is It Me ?

Dear Editor,

Is it me (sic), or are things really getting unbalanced here? Let me start with the fact that I am not politically active, or a deep social thinker, just a common Rockaway working stiff. Like most of my friends and neighbors in Rockaway, I love God, Country, and Community. That being said, I started to think things were amiss a few years ago, while attending a beach fundraiser for 911 victims, watching some friends and neighbors being ticketed and arrested for having opened beer cans on the beach, while pictures of the Mayor, enjoying a glass of wine at Central Park were on the front page of the papers. Again, Is It Just Me, or have things gotten even crazier since then; let’s see. We have a Mayor who changed the law to extend term limits for his position, but does not support extending term limits anymore (according to a sound bite I saw on the news).

Part of the stimulus package was to repair roads and schools, but at least here in NY, if you’re not laid off, you can barely afford to drive anywhere, with the cost of gas and tolls being what they are. I also don’t understand the Mayor’s new multi-billion dollar proposal to develop shorefront areas all along the state, while closing schools and laying off teachers. Who will have the intelligence, and education to engineer, budget, design, and develop the areas, (none of Rockaway was proposed, only a small part of Jamaica Bay).

And, what happened in this country and city to FREEDOM? I’m not in support of smoking, its not good for you, but if you’re dumb enough, and want to pay about $7.00 a pack in tax alone, why should you be fined for smoking in the open air, at the beach, boardwalk, park, hotdog stand, or anywhere else that resembles city owned property? Shouldn’t we have the freedom of choice here? But then again, there is a proposal to legalize marijuana. Is It Just Me, or does anyone else think we should have the freedom to smoke, (while not disturbing others), have a Board of Ed., not a Mayor who closes schools, lays off teachers, and hires more computer geeks to monitor them, shortens parades and other community functions, but hires more parking ticket writing agents. Jobs have been lost, salaries stayed the same or decreased, and the cost of living has gone WAY up, yet the cost of public transportation, to get to your underpaying job, (if you can get one), is at a rate that makes it cheaper to stay home, on unemployment. Is It Just Me, or does something seem wrong here!
