SFDS Rookie, Pee Wee Gold Win Close Games

The SFDS CYO Rookie Boys gutted out a tough win 24- 23 over Monastery to advance to the quarterfinals this Saturday at Molloy High School, where they will play St. Mary Winfield at 4:30 p.m.

Alex Goldberg penetrated the lane with a beautiful move and fed John O’Connor for the go ahead basket. Kyle Connolly sealed the deal on the next possession off a heads up pass from John Boyle. But it was the team’s grit, determination, and defense that won the game.

The Pee Wee Gold also stayed alive by beating Sacred Heart of Bayside and will face Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, 2:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Robert. The Bantams were eliminated by an outstanding St. Gabriel team. The Novices stayed close before falling to Our Lady of Trust in the final two minutes. The Intermediates squandered a lead and then the game in overtime against St. Margaret.

The Peggy Boyle Tournament will be full of action this weekend. Saturday begins with a Bantam winner’s bracket final between Blessed Trinity and St. Adalbert. St. Francis H plays St. Rose in a Subnovice elimination game at 1:00 p.m. The Novice winner’s bracket final has St. Francis N against Good Shepherd at 2:00 p.m. The 3:00 p.m. game is a Bantam elimination between St. Francis and Blessed Sacrament. 4:00 p.m. is an Intermediate elimination game between St. Francis and St. Adalbert.

The Rookie winner’s bracket final is at 5:00 p.m. with St. Francis against St. Stans. The Subnovice winner’s bracket final is at 6:00 p.m. with St. Francis G against St. Adalbert.

The day ends with a Rookie elimination game between Good Shep-herd and Our Lady of Hope at 7:00 p.m. Sunday’s games are the loser’s bracket’s finals with the winners ad-vancing to the championships on Saturday March 26. The championships on that day begin at 12:00 p.m. and will include the Special Awards ceremony following the 2:30 p.m. Bantam game.

The action will be hot this weekend so come on out to the St. Francis gym.
