Operating Engineers Recruit Apprentices

The International Union of Operating Engineers, Local Union #15 Joint Apprenticeship Committee will conduct recruitment from March 18 through March 31 for two operating engineer (heavy equipment operator) apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner has announced.

Applications can be obtained only at the following website: http://local15re-cruitment.org/ for ten business days (Monday through Friday) from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., during the recruitment period. All applications must be postmarked no later than April 21, 2011. Please follow instructions on the website. This is a lottery for an application. There is no guarantee after filling out the form online that everyone will receive an application.

Applicants without access to computers may visit their local library or call 311 to ask for their nearest Workforce One, One-Stop Center.

There will be a $25.00 fee for the aptitude testing, payable to the New York State Department of Labor. A determination to waive this fee will be made if prior notification is received and determined to be of good reason. Such as, if you are on welfare or receiving social services, the fee will be waived. It will only be waived if you provide verifiable proof.

The Committee requires that applicants:  Must be at least 18 years old  Must have a high school diploma or equivalent as recognized by local school authorities  Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by specific affidavit attesting to their ability to perform the work required, which includes the following:  Working with hand and power tools, being exposed to loud noise, hazardous voltages and respiratory irritants  Lift and move heavy tools and equipment parts, and will work from ladders and scaffolds  It may also include prolonged standing, climbing, walking, and repeated squatting, stretching and bending.  Some work may be required under extreme weather conditions. An apprentice will, at times, be exposed to confined spaces where movement is greatly limited.  Must take aptitude test administered by the State of New York

Employment Service  Must take a physical examination including a drug test, at the sponsor’s expense, after acceptance into the program  Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the United

States of America  Must possess a valid driver’s license, it may be required for the operation of heavy equipment through the streets of New York
