SFDS Teams Advance to CYO Sweet Sixteen

The CYO Boys Basketball playoffs continued this weekend and five SFDS teams have now advanced to the Sweet 16. The Pee Wee Gold beat St. Rose 23-18 and now play Sacred Heart of Bayside on Saturday, 4:30 p.m. at St. Joan of Arc. The Pee Wee Blue was not as fortunate, losing a tough game to St. Gabriel 22-18. The Novice Boys were impressive beating Holy Trinity and now face a difficult task against Our Lady of Trust at 2:00 on Saturday at Our Lady of Trust.

The Bantams utilized their speed and quickness to compensate for St. Sebastian’s distinct height advantage to gain a 33-21 victory. Matty Coletta (13 points), Teddy Stathis (8 points) and Kyle Hoffman made steals and forced turnovers all game. Joey Morelli (8 points) was a force on the boards and Ben Edwards neutralized St. Sebastian’s super sized center with physical defense. St. Gabriel will be the next opponent this Saturday, 3:45 p.m. at Martin Luther High School. The Rookies also beat St. Sebas-tian 44-34 as Alex Goldberg and Kyle Connolly led the way. Monastery is their next opponent this Saturday, 7:00 p.m. also at Martin Luther High School.

The Intermediates outscored SS. Joachim and Anne, 65-39, as Bard Featherston scored 22, Charles Gavigan 16, and Ray Marten 13. Strong defense by John Whelan, Connor Ryan and Anthony Scotto also keyed the win. Sunday’s game is 2:00 at St. Margaret against the hosts.

The Peggy Boyle Tournament is moving into its later stages. Games this Saturday will include SFDS H against SFDS M in the Novice division at 12:00 p.m.; Blessed Trinity against SFDS H in the Subnovice division at 1:00 p.m.; SFDS or St. Rose at 3:00 against St. Margaret in the Bantam division; finishing with Rookie and Intermediate games at 4:00, 5:00, 6:00, and 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday March 16 and then resumes on March 19 and March 20 with championship games scheduled for Saturday March 26 beginning at 12:00. Come and watch the action at the St. Francis gym.
