St. Rose Of Lima Team Achieves Weekend Wins

The St. Rose of Lima fifth grade boys basketball team headed into the CYO basketball playoffs with a strong finish. The team won their last six games of the season to end with an 11-3 record.

On Saturday, February 26, the boys had two must win games; a CYO playoff vs. St. Mary’s Winfield and a tournament game vs. Our Lady of Hope.

St. Rose quickly gained an 8-point lead against St. Mary’s Winfield. Point guards Liam Malsy, Mike Reardon and Sam Amato playing a great defensive pressing game.

St. Rose center Charlie Bostwick scored 20 points, power forward Puda Edmond had 15 points and Malsy had 4 points. Mike Reardon and Justin Barinsowski each had two points. David Greenridge assisted the team with his rebounding. Peter Delefeus and Angelo Fenty also helped the team to their first CYO playoff victory. Later in the day, the boys and their fans traveled to Woodhaven for a tournament game. By chance, they were facing next week’s CYO playoff team, Our Lady of Hope.

St. Rose was down 7 to 2 only one minute into the game as Our Lady of Hope came out strong. Coaches Bostwick and Malsy called a time out and regrouped the team. Edmond led the team with 15 points, Bostwick placed 11 points on the scoreboard. Greenridge had an outstanding rebounding game and made strong passes with the basketball. Reardon and Liam Malsy both scored baskets. Justin Barnisowski and Peter Delefeus each played strong defense. When the buzzer sounded, all of the players had helped the team defeat Our Lady of Hope, 30-29. The team would like to give a special thanks to Stacey and Frank Amato for the great pizza and soda. They are the fans of the week.

St. Rose will play their next CYO playoff game on March 5 vs. Our Lady of Hope at St. Joan’s and a tournament game on March 19 vs. SFDS.
