SDFS Novice Girls End Fantastic Season As Champions
The St. Francis de Sales Girls Novice Basket-ball team completed a remarkable CYO season by capturing the Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan Cham-pionship over the weekend.
The team first defeated St. Mel in the semifinals, 28-12, and then on Sunday, defeated Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, 24-10.
In the semis, St. Francis raced out to a 12-point halftime lead as they did in each of their five playoff games. The team was led offensively by Katie Marquardt and Elizabeth Clark (6 points each), Maddie McDade (5 points), and Kelly Ward and Grace DeCrescenzo (4 points each).
Katie Barrett, Sinead Gallagher, Carly McCann and Caroline Kelly played tight defense all over the court. At Sunday’s championship, it was Jessica Morelli who led the charge by topping in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots. It was Breanne McDonnell in the second half who made two key outside jumpers to increase the lead from 7 to 11 points as SFDS never looked back.
There was great support off the bench in the team’s most important game from Lindsay DeBoer, Claire Hughes and Carly McCann. The novice girls ended an incredible season with a 20-0 record in CYO games and 22-2 overall.
They will continue to play in the Peggy Boyle Tournament on March 2.
The Bantam girls also advanced to the finals by beating Blessed Trinity Green on Saturday, but fell to St. Adalbert in the championship. They return to action against Blessed Trinity White on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in the Peggy Boyle Tournament. It is the first game of the day with a late start due to the St. Patrick’s Parade, with the final game beginning at 9:00 p.m.
The schedule continues with seven games on Sunday beginning at 1:00 p.m. and more games on March 9. Games on the following weekend are only on , March 12. Other dates are March 16, 19 and 20, with the championships on Saturday, March 26.
The Boys Pee Wee Blue won their first game in the Diocesan playoffs by beating St. Joseph and will play St. Gabriel on Saturday, 11:00 a.m. at Corpus Christi. The Rookies also go to Corpus Christi for a 3:15 p.m. game against St. Sebastian. The Bantams play St. Sebastian on Sunday, 1:00 p.m. at Martin Luther High School.
The Intermediates play Sunday at Our Lady of Hope at 5:30 against St. Joachim and St. Anne. Back to back games at St. Gabriel on Saturday will have the Pee Wee Gold starting their game at 12:00 p.m., followed by the Novices at 1:00 p.m. against Holy Trinity.
The boys playoffs continue each weekend until the Final Four begin on March 26-27.
