Blessed Trinity Girls Fall In Semifinals Classic
Last Saturday at St. John’s Prep, Blessed Trinity (White) met top seeded St. Adalbert’s in the sixth grade girls CYO semi-finals. It was a terrific matchup as St. Adalbert’s entered the game unbeaten with their last loss coming at the hands of Blessed Trinity last season.
The once beaten Blessed Trinity squad gave the defending champs all they could handle as Keely McEachern led Blessed Trinity with 15 points with her outstanding play at point guard. The girls showed a never quit spirit as they bounced back from two six-point deficits as Head Coach Cathy Crockett held the team together as they battled a swarming St. Adalbert’s defense.
In the second half Jackie O’Connor, Meghan McGinn and Lauren Duggan made big baskets to close the gap. McEachern also continued to find ways to score from the field and from the foul line. With 30 seconds left it looked like Blessed Trinity might pull the upset when McEachern broke the press and found Duggan for a layup that put them up for the first time all day, but St. Adalbert’s quickly scored to force overtime.
With both teams exhausted, St. Adalbert’s prevailed in the bonus period by the score of 36-30 and went on to win their second consecutive Diocesan Championship the following day. Even though Blessed Trinity may have come up a little short, all the girls that competed in the game were winners for having played in such a tough and exciting contest.
