Michael Bellew

DEPUTY GRAND MARSHAL

Michael Bellew, the middle son of Irish immigrants, Thomas Bellew from Castlelaney County Armagh and Catherine Nee Cahill of Knockanoban County Clare, was born and raised in Bronx County. Along with his two brothers, Sean and Martin, Mike attended Our Lady of Mercy Grammar School and later benefited from the challenging teachings of the Irish Christian Brothers at All Hallows High School. Mike graduated from All Hallows in 1973 and continued his education at CUNY Lehman College, majoring in Business.

Mike took the civil service test and in 1981 began his career as a Sanitation Worker assigned to Manhattan West District 12.

He joined the Department’s Emerald Society and quickly learned that he did not have to go too far to be with fellow Irishmen who were involved in community and charity work.

Mike has a great love for Irish culture and music. He is currently the Treasurer of the 1,000 plus membership. Since 1981, Mike has stepped onto 5th Avenue proudly representing not only the Emerald Society but his family and friends as he continues to be proud of his Irish heritage and the long standing traditions of the country’s oldest and grandest parade. Mike also attends many other Irish parades and events city wide.

His leadership ability and commitment led to his promotion and steady ascent up the uniformed ranks holding the following key positions: Garage Supervisor in the Auxiliary Field Force; General Superintendent of Manhattan West District 2; Snow Superintendent of Manhattan Borough; Deputy Chief of Work Experience Program; Assistant Chief of Cleaning; and his present day title of Chief of Cleaning Operations.

Every other year, Mike travels abroad to Ireland to re-visit with friends and relatives in the south and the north of Ireland and reminisce of his childhood days of summer.
