Maureen McGovern Abernethy
Maureen has been a Rockaway resident since 1983. Her mother, Anne Forde McGovern, hails from County Mayo while her father, Johnny McGovern, comes from County Cavan. Maureen is proud of her sister, Claire O’Sullivan, a nurse, her brother, John Francis McGovern, a doctor of physical therapy. Maureen is married to Kevin Abernethy, an NYPD Captain, and she is the proud mother of three beautiful children: Dylan, Mollie Anne and Nicholas.
Maureen was educated at Blessed Sacrament in Brooklyn, St. Francis de Sales, Stella Maris High School, and is a proud St. John’s University alumnus. Maureen is currently an Assistant Principal in P.S. 43 in Far Rockaway, where she has worked since it opened in 1996. Maureen is a proud aunt to 16 nieces and nephews. She is also the proud godmother of Alison.
As a child she was brought to Rockaway yearly to see the St. Patrick’s Day parade. Her parents bought a flag and the parade was short and quick. It was a family tradition that ended with listening to Irish music at Sullivan’s bar.
Maureen has always been very proud of her Irish heritage. That was further developed by the many summers that were spent in Ireland with her cousins.
The McGovern and Abernethy families are thrilled to have Maureen selected as an honoree this year.
