CBB Ponding Sends Man To Hospital
Police sources identified the driver as Jason Robles, 27, of 10 Franklin Avenue in White Plains.
They said that he was driving northbound at about 4:40 p.m. on Friday, February 25, when he hit a large pond of water in the road, causing him to lose control of his 2010 Honda and to crash into a tree on the side of the road.
Broad Channel officials told The Wave that they have long warned the city’s Department of Transportation of the danger of ponding on the vital, heavilytraveled north-south road.
“We told [DOT Commissioner] Sadik- Kahn that cutting down a lane in each direction wouldn’t cut accidents unless the ponding problem was addressed as well,” one longtime Broad Channel activist, who asked not to be identified because she still has to deal with the agency, said this week. “The water is high and comes up suddenly, and the car begins to surf when it hits the water. There is no way to control the car once it begins to hydroplane because the trees are right there.”
According to the accident report, Robles was given a summons for not having a valid driver’s license.
