The Cornerstone PAL Center at Redfern Houses, Safe Space NYC, the Far Rockaway Adult Learning Center, the Queens Education Opportunity Center, the Queens Library and the Redfern Tenant Association have come together to promote education for the residents of the Rockaways with a new GED program.

The program provides pre-GED testing and then classes if needed. “The pretest helps you determine where you are,” said Barbara Miller of the Far Rockaway

Literacy Center.

The first round of pre-GED tests was given to 11 people and approximately six are ready to take the GED.

The others can take classes at the Far Rockaway Adult Learning Center.

“Those of you who are not ready for the test … we will take you in to a pre-GED class,” said Miller. “We have teachers to help you become ready to get your GED.”

Dr. Ed Williams (right), a Redfern resident himself, called the program a “great opportunity.” He added, “you’re not going to make it without a diploma, GED, or college diploma.” Doug Wilcox, the director of the Redfern Cornerstone PAL, looks on. The program is open to all Rockaway residents. A second round of pre-testing is scheduled for April.

According to Miller, “next year the scores are going to go up, you’re going to pay [to take the test] and cannot take it several times over.” The learning center can be reached at 718-945-7058.

According to Dr. Ed Williams, approximately 70 percent of the adult population in Far Rockaway does not have a GED or high school diploma.

Pre-testing and GED classes are free. To find out more information call the Cornerstone PAL Center at Redfern Housing Development at 718-471-0357.

Safe Space is providing free MTA cards for those who need to travel to the learning center on Beach 92 Street.
