Rockaway Beach Volleyball League Prepares For 2011 Season

By Joe McGivney

The Rockaway Beach Volleyball League is always looking for referees to join for the 2011 season. The Rockaway Beach Volleyball League is always looking for referees to join for the 2011 season. Preparations for the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League Summer 2011 season are underway. Patty Moule will again lead her troops into battle and try to top last year’s very successful campaign. Each year the first order of business is to find out which teams will be returning and which will not. Last year, eight divisions of different playing levels were fielded with a record-setting 68 teams. The league will not expand this year and that total will remain the same for 2011.

In preparation for the season, the first critical date is fast approaching. Team captains are required to attend first meeting of the year at Kerry Hills Pub on Thursday, March 23 at 8:00 p.m. Captains must bring a full roster (unsigned is OK) and a deposit of $100 per team to insure a spot in the league. If a captain is unable to attend he must send a representative in his place with both the money and the roster. Roster and uniform order forms are available on the website – www.rbvl.com.

The RBVL committee celebrates last year’s success. The RBVL committee celebrates last year’s success. All players are welcome to come out of hibernation and join the festivities as well. Although the league experienced some normal growing pains, the general feedback on the 2010 season has been very positive and the league is grateful for everyone’s input and assistance.

Feel free to attend the first meeting and to voice any personal likes and dislikes. The league is always striving to improve.

Prospective new referees are welcome to come by if they would like to be worked into our rotation. You do not need to be a certified ref to work in the RBVL. In fact, many refs have been quite successful with a strong playing background (college and high school) and limited referee experience. Captains can do the league a big favor by e-mailing their vital information

(name, address, phone numbers, e-mail address, team name) and the information for an alternate (or two) from their team.

If the information is the same as last year, don’t do a thing. However, if anyone has a new e-mail address or has been elected a new captain, send the information to jmcgivney2@nyc.rr.com as soon as possible; waiting for the meeting is not necessary.

The RBVL is looking to improve the speed and accuracy of announcements and information dissemination.

A few additional special dates can be marked on the calendar. The league will hold the second and final meeting before the season on Thursday, April 13 at 8:00 p.m. at Kerry Hills. Uniform orders and payment in full is due at that time. Any changes to initial rosters should be noted as well.

Wednesday, May 25, will be the league’s first night of volleyball at the beach. It will be a practice night for all and uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time. Hopefully the weather will cooperate as it did last year. Wednesday, June 1 will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until August 13.

On that Saturday, the league championships will be played – keep your schedules clear.

Opening day will arrive quickly and there is much to be done beforehand.

For any questions before the meeting please call Patty Moule at 917-613-0908 (Call between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.).
