Peggy Boyle Tournament Begins

SFDS Advance To Final Four

The St. Francis DeSales Novice girls advanced to the CYO Diocesan Final 4 with a convincing victory over St. Pancras.

The girls raced out to a 20-point halftime lead led by the outside shooting of Elizabeth Clark (7 points). But once again it was the outstanding defense and all around ease of Katie Marquardt, who scored a game high 11 points leading SFDS to coast in the second half.

The defensive pressure was constant led by Kelly Ward, who added 6 points off the bench. Maddie McDade displayed her speed dribbling around the entire court. The inside rebounding was dominated by Jessica Morelli, Carli McCann, and Sinead Gallagher.

The novice girls will face St. Mel in the semifinals at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at Archbishop Molloy High School. The championship game is at St. John’s Prep is on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

The SFDS Bantam girls have also advanced to the Final 4 after beating St. Sebastian. Saturday’s semifinal is to be held at 1:45 pm. As SFDS goes against Blessed Trinity Green at St. John’s Prep. The winner returns the following day for the championship game at 3:45 p.m.

The Intermediates fell short in their quest to be the third SFDS team going for the gold as they fell to St. Adalbert, 33-20.

The Boys playoffs begin this weekend, but only the Pee Wee Blue team is in action to take on St. Joseph at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at MS 67. The rest of the boys begin play the following weekend.

The Peggy Boyle Tournament gets underway on Saturday and will command the St. Francis gymnasium stage for the next month. 32 teams from Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Long Island are entered in the five divisions. The St. Francis Subnovice girls will face each other at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday to kick things off.

At 2:00 p.m., Tim Harkins Pee Wees will play St. Rose of Long Island and Rich McDade’s squad follows at 3:00 p.m. against Good Shepherd. The Pee Wees is playing up in the Novice division with Randy Neiswenter’s favorites beginning on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

The Bantams are off for the week and will start play next Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The Rookies host Good Shepherd this Saturday at 6:00 p.m. and the Intermediates will conclude the first day of the tournament against Long Beach Catholic at 7:00 p.m.

The tournament resumes on Wednesday March 2 and continues on March 5, 6, 9, 12, 16, 19 and 20 with the championships starting on March 26. Wednesday games begin at 6 p.m. Saturday games start at 12:00 p.m. (except on March 5 at 4:00 p.m.) and Sunday games begin at 1:00 p.m.
