Molloy High School Swimming Coach Honored
The Archbishop Molloy Girls Varsity Swimming team had another successful season with a dual meet record of 8-1. The team finished second at the GCHSAA Individual Championships. Swimmers and Rockaway residents Kirsten McCabe, Paige Whelan and Eryka Morales were all part of bringing the team back once again as the Brooklyn/Queens GCHSAA Swimming Champions.
This year’s championship honored the late Vincent Harkins, who was a Breezy Point resident, longtime swimming coach and official. The Coach of the Year award, which was renamed the Vinny Harkins Coach of the Year award, was given to Rockaway resident and Molloy head coach Dennis Wresch.
The award was presented by Harkins’ wife, Marie Harkins, and their children. Coach Wresch says he was very honored to be the first recipient of this award. “Mr. Harkins was always patient and very helpful when I was a new coach. He loved the sport of swimming and wanted every participant to enjoy and respect this great sport,” Wresch said.
When asked about next season, Coach Wresch added, “I’m looking forward to next year. I’m excited that our normal practice pool at The Immaculate Conception Center has been re-opened, and we will resume practice in the afternoons. I am hoping we get more talented swimmers to add to our team and a chance to become City Champs once again.”
