From The Artists Studio
A dual arts event on Sunday, February 27 from 2-4 p.m. at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center brings to light the ecological and emotional power exerted by our bay on its artists. “RAA on the Bay” is an exhibit, presently at the center through February 27, of paintings, photographs, prints and sculptures by RAA members that vibrate with the beauty, moods and intangible inspirations of the bay and its surroundings. To celebrate the exhibit and the bay, “Words for the Birds and Art in the Park” will feature the RAA Writers Group performing readings of prose, poetry and short plays created by local writers influenced variously by their surroundings. The afternoon will include live performances of acoustic music. The event is free and open to the public.
Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is located on Cross Bay Boulevard in Broad Channel. To learn more about this year-round local treasure visit: http://www.nyharborparks.org/visit/ja ba.html or call 718-318-4340.
“The Life of Still Objects” is the exhibit now on display in sTudio 6 Gallery, RoCA through March 27. It presents a variety of approaches and sensibilities by a number of artists to the broadly interpreted genre of still life. Among the best of those artists is photographer Stephanie Schmidt. In “Ocean Study V” and “Beach,” Schmidt photographs a singular massive object in a vast, luminous environment. The result echoes and vibrates with the contrast. Mary Ann McEvoy’s quilt hangings are charming pieces. “Easy Chair” is a whimsical, colorful and beautifully executed work that would light up the wall behind anyone’s easy chair.
Computer Classes for Artists: Instructor Jessica Schulman will hold classes on Tuesdays, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. from March 1 - April 12 in sTudio 7 Gallery, RoCA at Fort Tilden.
