Rockaway Ropes Boxer Wins at Lake Placid
Promising amateur boxer Joseph “Mack” Williams is off to a good start early in the 2011 boxing campaign. The 22-year old heavyweight fighter, representing the Rockaway Ropes Gymnasium in Arverne, recorded a threeround victory via decision over Chris Arriola in the USA Boxing Regionals held in Lake Placid on February 11.
The judges handed Williams a 5-0 decision in the 201-pound open class championship after three completed rounds. Williams has now qualified for the opportunity to compete at the U.S. National Championships on June 19 in Colorado Springs. A victory in the tournament will land Williams a roster spot with the U.S. boxing team for the 2012 Olympics in London. Williams is also chasing a second championship in the ongoing Daily News Golden Gloves tournament. He captured the title in the 201-pound novice division in 2009 and lost last year in the 201 open class division finals. Williams gained his first Golden Gloves win on February 3 in a 5-0 decision over Earl Newman Jr at the New York Athletic Club.
