Local Shoots Up Beach Boardwalk
Steven J. Clarke, 35, of 81-04 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, was arraigned on February 5 on charges of criminal possession of a weapon and first degree reckless endangerment for allegedly pulling a gun from his waistband near the Reliance Ambulette he drives, which was parked on Shore Front Parkway at Beach 84 Street, and firing eight shots towards the beach and boardwalk.
Sources say that the incident took place at about 11:15 p.m. on August 13, 2010.
Police say that, although there was a large gathering of adults and children in the oceanfront park just north of the boardwalk, nobody was hit.
According to the criminal complainant, Clarke was spotted stopped on Shore Front Parkway by a female EMS worker who was stationed at that location.
The EMS worker told police that people scattered and dove for cover under benches when the shooting started.
After firing the shots, Clarke got back into his ambulette and drove away.
Police responding to a number of 911 calls found spent shells at the scene, as well as one live .45 caliber round. The ambulette was found three blocks away.
Later that night, at about 4 a.m., Clarke was spotted trying to get into the ambulette.
He was put under arrest by the officers who spotted him attempting to drive away in the ambulette.
Clarke faces a sentence of 15 years in prison if he is convicted.
