Cyclones Offer Aguilera Chance To Sing

A missed field goal as time expires. A dropped pass in the end zone. A last minute interception. A “wardrobe malfunction.” Each year, it seems like someone makes a mistake and because it happens in the Super Bowl, the whole world is buzzing about it the next day. This year’s victim is four-time Grammy Award winner and Staten Island native Christina Aguilera, whose slip-up during the Star-Spangled Banner has everyone talking.

With that in mind, the Brooklyn Cyclones have offered Christina Aguilera the opportunity to perform the National Anthem at MCU Park this summer. The team will even provide her a copy of the lyrics to prevent another mishap from occurring.

“We’ve all made mistakes,” said Cyclones General Manager Steve Cohen. “But when most of us make mistakes, it’s not in front of 100 million people watching in every corner of the world. When a player makes a mistake, they usually don’t get a shot at redemption, but with a singer, that’s a different story.”

In addition, the Cyclones will give a local group the opportunity to launch their music career with the “Stars are Born” competition. Starting Monday, February 7 and running through Monday, March 14, all New York City high schools, choral groups, glee clubs, or church choirs are invited to send an audition tape to the Cyclones in hopes of being New York’s next big thing.

There will be five finalists chosen and voted upon by the public with the winner getting the opportunity to perform in front of thousands during a DooWop Concert at MCU Park on July 30. They will also be given the chance to show Ms. Aguilera how it’s done by singing the National Anthem and God Bless America during the Cyclones game on July 3 and will be presented with a $500 donation in an on-field ceremony prior to the game.

“New York City is full of hidden talent,” Cohen said. “And just like the Cyclones players hope their career on the baseball field gets jumpstarted in Brooklyn, we hope this contest can give musical groups the chance to ignite their singing career.” For full details on the competition or to learn how to apply, visit brooklyncyclones.com.
