Brooklyn Hurricanes Celebrate Great Football Year
The Brooklyn Hurricanes Football Conference enjoyed one of its best seasons in 2010 as the program honored its 200 players at their three award ceremonies last month.
On January 14, the Travel Team (12- and 13-year-olds) celebrated a tremendous year at Buckley’s Restaurant in Marine Park. The team made the Big Apple Football Playoffs for a second consecutive season, advancing to the Division Championship Game after defeating the Brooklyn Tomahawks in the first round.
C.J. Wright was named Team Most Valuable Player while Luke Schreiner of Breezy Point won the Most Outstanding Offensive Player Award for his play at QB. Charlie Gavigan of Belle Harbor captured the Offensive Back Award for his tough play at fullback while Aidan Morgan of Rockaway Beach was named top offensive lineman. The other top awards went to: John Muraco (Coaches Award), Zach Salvato (Defensive Player), Bruno Bavaro (Defensive Line) and John Powers-Velasquez of Belle Harbor (Sportsmanship Award). Buckley’s also hosted the Pee-Wee Division Awards Breakfast on Saturday, January 29 as Trazail Wingate of Rockaway Beach won the Danny Suhr Award, given to the Division’s Most Valuable Player. Wingate dominated the league on both sides of the ball, leading the Blue Jays to the division title.
The Rockaway peninsula was also well represented with many team awards going to players from Rockaway and Breezy Point, including Kyle Strehle (Legionnaires), Connor Ryan (Legionnaires) and Aidan Strongreen (Huskies).
The Jr. Pee Wee Division Awards event was held the following day at Gargiulo’s Restaurant in Coney Island. The Broncos were recognized as Division Champions following their undefeated season, with Byron Colindres walking away with the Timmy Stackpole Award, given to the Division’s Most Valuable Player.
Other top league awards went to Brendan Gallagher of Breezy Point (offensive line), Kevin Connelly of Belle Harbor (linebacker) and Anthony Cimino of Belle Harbor (offensive back). Team award winners included; D.J Wingate (Broncos), Timmy Defonzo (Falcons), John Resker (Bears), John Walsh (Bears), Aidan Smith (Bears), Connor Baldwin (Bears) and Colin Donohue (Bears). The Hurricanes would also like to congratulate the more than 55 alumni who played high school football this past season, including: Patrick O’Grady (Xavier), Chris Murdoch (Xavier), Brendan Stackpole (St. Francis Prep), Nick and Chris Ruggierio (Xaverian), Devon Mitchell (Bishop Ford), Rush Miller (Poly Prep), Junior Anifowoshe (Madison), Jack Hurley (St. Francis Prep) and Jim Wolfer (Xavier).

The entire organization is very proud that these players and many more represented the Brooklyn Hurricanes all over the city in both the CHSFL and PSAL.
