Time For A Much Needed Change

Dear Editor,

With rumors filtering through the peninsula of our longtime Assemblywoman, Audrey Pheffer, being in line for a County Clerk appointment comes some interesting possibilities. There is also the problem of been there seen that. With each new election or special election the same tired faces seem to pop up. With no new solid ideas we go and listen to the same tired debates. If, by chance a new face should pop up, he or she is quickly erased with some shaky inside party shenanigans. The odds of someone young with new ideas and willing to put some hard work into the important position of assembly person are slim to none.

But what if the powers that be decide that the voters have had enough of the same old choices? The Democratic and Republican leaders decide that it is time for some new faces. Hooray for Rockaway. How about Gerry Sullivan, past candidate for the assembly and now hard working assistant to councilman Ulrich being chosen for the Republican nod? On the Democratic side, think of retired New York City Police Lieutenant Glenn DiResto, who was robbed of a shot at councilperson by Geraldine Chapey at the last minute in the last election. Glenn has been all over the peninsula, speaking on important Rockaway issues and also has been putting a lot of time in with the 100th Precinct Community Council. Just what is needed in Rockaway, a choice of two young hard working choices to speak for us in the assembly.

Sadly, though we know all to well that Lew Simon, Democratic district leader has never met a political office he did not want to run for. The same can be said of Geraldine Chapey. As for Audrey’s long time aide and right hand woman, Jo Ann Shapiro, God bless her, Joann has always fought the tough fight and always been there to handle any problems in the office. Joann in the mix would not be a problem as she would also be a new candidate.

It is time for the Democratic party leaders to start running their offices and stop running for every elective seat that becomes available. If you aspire to higher callings, great. Then step down and let some younger people with fresh ideas take over the leadership of your parties. Audrey, I wish you all the luck if you happen to be chosen for the clerk position. You have basically served us well, except maybe on the elimination of the commuter tax which was scrapped years ago, costing us multi-millions in revenue for the state. But let us stay on a positive note. If there is a special election, would you not happily rush to the polls to elect a young new Assemblyperson? The perfect choices are there, Glenn and Gerry. Let the leaders do our peninsula a huge favor and leave their egos at home and choose Glenn DiResto and Gerry Sullivan as the two candidates for Rockaway’s very important Assembly seat. Howie, I don’t know if you have anything important for your It’s My Turn column this week, but I feel this is extremely important to put some pressure on the usual suspects to do the right thing. You are the right man for the job. I hope we are on the same page on this issue. Enough is enough with Lew, Geraldine and Frank. I am actually rooting for Audrey to get that position, just to see the possibilities I have mentioned. Hope you can use this. Time for a change!!!

PALMER DOYLE
