Technology Shaping Current Affairs

Dear Editor,

Of course technology is playing a role in the current situation in Egypt and Yemen. How? Check Twitter for instance. The constant traffic of stories and rumors on one of the most visited websites holds as much clout as the demonstrations of the people. Westerners can be immediately transformed into Egypt and kept up to date on everything going on in the Arab nations. Facebook was the meeting point of would be demonstrators weeks before anything happened in Yemen. Social networking sites are becoming central to everything that goes on in the world, puts pressure on leaders to act quickly and efficiently, and rallies the spirit of the demonstrators who have amassed tremendous support in just a short few days.

The internet has allowed the world to become constantly connected and united. But now, not only can we see and hear about what is going on through use of the internet, but we can make a difference. Twitter especially has rallied great numbers in the middle-east and opened the eyes of the world to exactly how the situation is working out and being dealt with by the respective autocratic regimes. Rumors cause turmoil and increased animosity against the police forces repealing the demonstrators in Egypt. Within the next few days rallies and demonstrations will only become stronger and stronger until the desires of the people are tended to.

At the same time the Internet is a luxury that many people in these countries do not get to take advantage of, but when they get a glimpse of just how privileged a democratic society lives, they want and envy. With this strong sense of passion and commitment the sky is the limit for these demonstrators and they will get things done.

The future of our world will be a smarter interconnected on where we can help faster and make this world a safer place to live in. WikiLeaks especially has been a benchmark for government transparency and people really starting to take the upper hand in governmental affairs. There will be people to help when people need help and the Internet helps us get to a point where we can make people aware of problems and get things accomplished.

We will continue to gain a deeper understanding of the entire world and archaic regimes WILL be overthrown and reinstalled with newer democratic regimes. No one wants to live in a country where they can’t speak their mind or enjoy equal rights. This is why this will be successful and the world will be a better place because of it.

So keep Tweeting and posting on Facebook because an interconnected planet is a smarter planet, a more modern planet, and a safer planet.
