Celebrate Black History At Gateway

The Harlem Hellfighters: the 369th Regiment was the first all-black United States combat unit to be shipped overseas during WWI, organized in New York’s Army National Guard.

Celebrate Black History Month at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Saturday, February 5, 2011, 2pm-3:30pm. Learn how the Germans dubbed the unit the “Hellfighters”, because in 191 days of duty on the ground, they never had any men captured nor ground taken. Learn about their welcome home parade up Fifth Avenue from the Washington Square Park Arch to the Armory in Harlem.

Join a park ranger to uncover this forgotten chapter in American and New York City history. In the winter, park events may be cancelled due to snow or ice conditions. Call (718) 318-4340 before visiting Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.
