State Program Offers Free Cancer Screenings For Women
Women in Queens County who are over 50 and have not had a mammogram for more than a year are eligible for free mammograms in one of five hospitals in Queens.
The cancer screening for uninsured women is run under the Cancer Services
Program of Eastern Queens run by the New York State Department of Health. Among the hospitals offering the free screenings is Peninsula Hospital Center in Arverne.
Barbara Buffolino of PHC told The Wave that the clinic is held at the Family Health Clinic one Thursday each month. The first piece of advice from Buffolino is to call for an appointment. All appointments are already taken for this month. The next CSP clinic will be March 10.
“Uninsured women over 50 will receive a breast exam and a mammogram,” said Buffolino. She added that they will also be seen if a follow-up is necessary.
Buffolino also said that, “If a woman under 50 already has a finding and wants a second opinion, they need to bring in [copies of the original records].”
According to the DOH website, the CSP offers eligible clients “clinical breast exams, mammograms, Pap tests and colorectal cancer screening through fecal tests. Clients receiving positive screening tests also receive diagnostic testing and are referred to treatment if needed. Eligible clients are, in addition, enrolled in the Medicaid Cancer Treatment Program for Medicaid coverage for the duration of their breast, cervical, colorectal or prostate cancer treatment.” The staff at participating hospitals will assist patients if more tests are required.
The program provides legal and supportive services to people and their families who are affected by cancer.
