Historical Views of the Rockaways

How The Rockaways Were Described In The Year 1911
From The Rockaway Museum Commentary by Emil Lucev, Curator Dedicated To The Memory Of Leon S. Locke

Although Historical Views does not always have pictures of things that existed in the Rockaways years ago, we did find a Wave feature in a 1911 edition (The Wave has been Rockaway’s newspaper since 1893), that paints a verbal image of the peninsula in that year!

There are many things listed in the feature, some of which are history, and no pun is intended!

I once used the term, “on this empty lot once stood...” to tell a short history of the peninsula. But now all those empty lots are filling up with housing of all kinds and descriptions and prices, and many things that were complained about…things that made the Rockaways join greater New York in 1898...are still on the list!

The main complaints were about transportation, flooding and sewers. How about that, Aye!
