From The Artist Studio
The submission deadline for “The Life of Still Objects” has been extended to today, January 28.
You are invited to capture the motion and emotion in the world of objects that may be still but never static. Media may include, but are not limited to, painting, drawing, mixed media, cartoon, kinetic art, photography, literature, video and more. Use your imagination to bring new interpretations of still life through inventive angles, contexts, subjects and juxtapositions of objects. Deadline for submission:
January 28, 2011. Exhibition on display February 19, 2011 – March, 27, 2011. “Reflection” continues through Feb-ruary 6 in sTudio 6 Gallery in RoCA, Fort Tilden (see gray box for details).
Just as a sampling of the work in the show: With a limited palette, and masterful use of the medium, Ellen Hoyt has achieved three delicate watercolors – three small works that greet the viewer upon first entering the main room of the gallery. In “Central Park Bridge,” photographer Stephanie Schmidt frames the poetic, lyric sweep of a human-made construction and reveals its flow into natural forms adjacent to it.
Featured guest at the RAA’s next general meeting (see gray box) will be RAA Vice President Dan Guarino portraying Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt as Guarino did for the Friends of Maple Grove Cemetery walking tour, “Spirits Alive,” last October. TR was this country’s 26th president. Guarino feels a very personal connection to TR.
The former US vice president is a great hero to the present RAA veep. A driven, highly energetic and motivated man of many interests and endeavors, Roosevelt served his country in several capacities. During the Spanish American War at the end of the 19th century, as a colonel he led a regiment of horse soldiers called the Rough Riders. Among other government jobs he was governor of New York and Secretary of the Navy. More about this statesman, adventurer, hunter and devoted naturalist, and the story behind portraying him, in a later column.
The next Writers Group meeting will be Sunday, February 20, 4-6 p.m. in sTudio 6 Gallery. The last one saw the reading of the work of a first-time short story writer known to RAA as a photographer; another member read a poem of hers she wants to include in a book she is compiling; and a short story writer surprised everyone with a poem, all inspiring others to attempt forms they had not yet explored.
The Writers Group is looking for guest speakers at future meetings. The subject could be on writing or on a related area. Previous guests, who included a publishing executive, have spoken on very useful and interesting topics. If you have a topic you feel worthy of presentation or know someone who does, please email group chairman Dan Guarino: TWCgxwgj. The group is also looking to bring their popular spoken word and performance presentations into the community, to other venues such as hospitals, nursing homes and public spaces. If you have any suggestions or can facilitate such an event, please contact Dan.
