RCC Hosts Martin Luther King Day Awards Ceremony

Not pictured: Dr. Edward Williams. Photo by Janice Williams. On Saturday, January 15, the Rockaway Community Corporation held its annual awards luncheon program at the Bethel A.M.E. Church in Far Rockaway, in celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The master of ceremonies was Sandra Bilbo-Dent, chairperson of RCC, assisted by Elaine Short, secretary, and Lovette Glasgow, treasurer.

Three awards for leadership in the community were presented: to Assemblywoman Michele R. Titus; Rev. Evan Dean Gray, Sr., Pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church; and Dr. Edward Williams, President of the NAACP Far Rockaway Chapter. Three awards were also given for community service – to Susie Wilson, Parent Coordinator of PS 197 in Far Rockaway; Jackie Stillwell, Parent Coordinator of PS/MS 183 in Rockaway Beach; and Deacon Jimmy Stillwell, Executive Director of the Samaritan Hands Outreach Center at St. John Baptist Church in Arverne. Two moving solos were sung by Rosanna Haigler, and original artworks were displayed by community members Elohor Urhiafe- Bobson and James McKay.
