Call to Artists for “The Life of Still Objects:
You are invited to capture the motion and emotion in the world of objects that may be still but never static. Media may include, but are not limited to, painting, drawing, mixed media, cartoon, kinetic art, photography, literature, video and more. Use your imagination to bring new interpretations of still life through inventive angles, contexts, subjects and juxtapositions of objects. Deadline for submission: January 21, 2011. Exhibition on display February 19, 2011 – March, 27, 2011.
The opening reception for “Reflections” featured the crooning of Gary Russo, much to the delight of the many who attended, and a delicious table of comestibles. The exhibition continues through February 6 in sTudio 6 Gallery, RoCA at Fort Tilden. Admission is free. See gray box for gallery hours. Thanks to the Exhibitions Committee for making a winter’s day in sTudio 6 a warm refuge from the cold.
Several artworks caught my attention. Ellen Hoyt achieves luminous results with a limited palette in her three delicate watercolors. “Reflections on Birchfield” by Gary Russo cleverly stays on theme while using the unmistakable palette of the artist Charles Birchfield in a small town scene that could fit neatly into that artist’s repetoire. Penelope Atheras sets a still life on a black acrylic canvas to create a world of positive and negative radiance, in which the shimmer- ing black appears to shine through even solid objects.
Denis Macrae’s photograph “Tree Reflection” presents the reversed poetry of the sienna, bare arms of trees in a snow-dotted pond.
More next week about “Reflections.”
