RAA Hosts 'Reflections' At Fort Tilden
“Be prepared to see your world turned upside down, reflected inside out and stretched as far as the imagination can go!” says a Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) announcement for their new exhibition, “Reflections.” For their first show of this new decade and year, RAA bids visitors to “come view the intriguing and unusual repeated, doubled, distorted, duplicated, opposite and/or opposing images that capture the eye and mesmerize the mind.”
“Reflections” features the work of 19 artists and, as its name implies, opens up a vibrant variety of mirrored images, both exotic and mundane, seen in a whole new light. The exhibition, which is on view in the intimate sTudio 6 Gallery in the Rockaway Center for the Arts a Fort Tilden, runs from Saturday, January 15 to Sunday, February 6. Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4 p.m. There will be an opening reception with music, refreshments and many of the artists on hand Sunday, February 16, 12-4 p.m.
“Many of the submissions captured the essence of the theme with … mirrored images hosted by pooled water, windows and mirrors doubling …spectacular views,” stated Joan Boudreault, one of the show’s jurors. “There were many works that were/ are spectacular!’
“The reflections also include some that were [very] unusual, [such as] the teapot reflecting the RAA Board Members in session,” added co-juror Maryann McEvoy.
According to the RAA website, “Reflections” artists were asked to bring their ‘vision’ and imagination to the art of the reflective image. The exhibition was open to all media, including watercolor, drawing, photography, sculpture, literature, painting, video, poetry, performance, film, and more, noting “mirrors, glass, polished surfaces, water are all just the starting points.”
Said Exhibitions Committee spokesperson Renee Radenberg, “The submissions were very unusual interpretations of reflections. Some artists used the definition literally as a repeat of prints and ‘reflections’ on a door, plus numerous unusual reflections on objects – water and windows. For example, the reflection on a silver teapot and distorted images reflected on a window or water.”
RAA invites all to take a good look at this and the many other works that comprise “Reflections.” It may change more than a few points of view.
Reflections artists include: Joseph Abbate, Wendy Armenio, Penelope Atheras, Madeline Braisted, Ed Broderick, Kalin Callaghan, Temah Garbaty, Dan Guarino, Igor Gushchin, Ellen Hoyt, Audrey Irwin, M. Elliot Killian, Ruth Kraiem, Larisa Levina, Muriel Linetsky, Denis Macrae, Ann Murray, Stephanie Schmidt and Jessica Schulman.
Gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday from 12-4 p.m. and by appointment. Gallery admission and all events are free, as is parking. For more information on exhibitions, events, meetings and directions please call 718-474-0861, e-mail info@- raa116.org or visit www.rockawayartistsalliance.org.
