Local Food Program Sets Cooking Demonstrations

Culinary Kids CSA continues to promote its new healthy food program to the Rockaway peninsula for the 2011 season.

The Community Supported Agriculture Program in association with the USDA, supports the introduction of more organic produce to the residents of the Rockaway peninsula and is making it more affordable and in more abundance for consumers.

The first CSA workshop for the 2011 season will be held at the Peninsula Library located at 92-25 Rockaway Beach Boulevard in Rockaway Beach.

Additionally, Culinary Kids C.S.A. will be hosting cooking demonstrations, the first two of which are scheduled for Saturday, February 12 and March 12 in the Meditation Room at Peninsula Center for Extended Care and Rehabilitation (next to Peninsula Hospital Center), 50-51 Beach Channel Drive, Far Rockaway, New York – both from 2-4 p.m. and on a first come, first served basis.

The Community Supported Agriculture Program is a Share program that customers buy into for the whole growing season from June to November. Clients can pick up fresh organic produce from the Culinary Kids Urban Farm at the corner of Beach 31 Street and Seagirt Boulevard, on a weekly basis. Many types of shares are available and range from a full share of fruits and vegetables which will feed a family of 4-5 weekly, to organic meats, cheeses and dairy products. Half shares for individuals and smaller families are available as well. Shares are designed to fit everyone’s family size and budget.

“The necessity for better food and nutrition is vital,” says founder and executive director, chef Malisa Rivera. “Organic fruits, vegetables and meats are known to be healthier because of the way they are cultivated and grown. Organic livestock as a whole only eat organic grains, grasses and green vegetables which in turn make the consumer who eats it healthier.

The main drawback is that organic foods are more expensive than non-organic produce and meats. Our goal is to make these healthy foods available to the residents of Rockaway by working with them and working within their budgets.”

Culinary Kids C.S.A. Program believes that everyone should have the ability to eat healthier and is offering a variety of share programs designed to fit everyone’s budget.
