Rockaway Artists Alliance, Inc. is keeping pace with the world of Internet communication. As you know from previous columns, RAA is on Facebook. Become a fan of the page and get the total visual and verbal scoop on RAA events, artists and their work. And, if you have pictures or videos that you would like to see on Rockaway Artists Alliance, Inc. Facebook page, please forward them to board member John Grillo at Grilloin rock@aol.com, or to the administrative office at info@raa116.org for approval to be posted to the page.

Now, RAA is on Twitter at twitter.com/rockawayartists. Further, www.rockawayartistsalliance.org will soon be expanding its horizons to better serve the public. On what will be a fully secure website, you will eventually be able to perform tasks that include paying membership dues, paying exhibition fees and making donations to our not-for-profit organization. Stay tuned for more.

Call to Artists: Entry form and prospectus for “The Life of Still Objects” can be obtained at the RAA website and by contacting the office.

You are invited to capture the motion and emotion in the world of objects that may be still but never static. Media may include, but are not limited to, painting, drawing, mixed media, cartoon, kinetic art, photography, literature, video and more. Use your imagination to bring new interpretations of still life through inventive angles, contexts, subjects and juxtapositions of objects. Deadline for submission: January 21, 2011. Exhibition on display February 19, 2011 – March, 27, 2011.

Without further ado, the answers to last week’s Rockaway Artists Alliance Test Your Art Knowledge Quiz: 1) and 2) Joseph Mallord William

Turner was an English artist who lived from 1775 to 1851. 3) Turner was interested in capturing natural phenomena such as storms, rain, the power of the sea. He explored the influence of light in his paintings; light as the emanation of

God’s spirit. Turner translated these effects by using oil paint like watercolor, creating fluid, ephemeral, atmospheric images. These techniques greatly influenced the work of Claude Monet and the

Impressionists. 4) Turner was known primarily for his landscapes. 5) The English painter was also wellknown for his printmaking, publishing a collection of 70 prints under the title “Liber Studiorum.” The

Turner Muse-um in Sarasota,

Florida exhibits, exclusively, Turner’s prints. 6) Using oils with increasing transparency in his late career, so that the solidity objects almost disappear, Turner evokes the shimmering qualities of pure light.

Thank you, Wikipedia.

Thank you, Vivian Carter for an informative slide show about the mission of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater.

Inspiring in its ultimate message, the talk by a devoted volunteer for the environmentalist Clearwater organization, made it quite obvious why and how a group of dedicated and motivated people who care can grow to significant numbers to change a seemingly unchangeable situation.
