Rockaway Outdoors/Tales From The Wheelhouse

By Captain Vinnie Calabro

For those living around the Rockaway coast and Jamaica Bay, the winter becomes a very interesting if not special time.

As the marshes begin to freeze over and the dunes replace grasses for snow cover one, if observant enough, can see not only the beauty of this winter landscape but the many animals that reside all season long. So for those with an early bout of cabin fever it’s a good time to do some exploring and burn some excessive calories. Some of the local environmental groups schedule tours so that’s something to look into.

Meanwhile out east and throughout New England, codfish are showing up. The transients from here who make the trek to Montauk and Rhode Island are seeing some excellent codfish action. Some quality fish among the mix, so now’s a good time to fill the fridge. Locally, mackerel are taking up their winter residence offshore, and if conditions remain they should continue for a while. So that’s where we are, at codfish showing up on cue with some mackerel and ling thrown in locally.

Until the next tide…
