A nesting box at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge will be one of the stops for visitors this weekend. There will be two special programs at the Gateway National Recreation Area this coming weekend, January 8 and 9.

On Saturday, January 8, at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Sanctuary in Broad Channel, the park will host a “Wild Winter Nature Hike,” in which participants will be able to find out how plants and animals survive winter. The program will begin at 10 a.m. and run until 11:30 p.m.

Officials warn that participants should wear proper footwear and to bring both binoculars and bottled water.

On Sunday, January 9, also at the Wildlife Refuge, the park service will host “Photo Magic,” a program that invites photographer Johann Schumacher to share his talents and knowledge about picture-taking with participants..

There will be an indoor presentation followed by an outdoor segment. Visitors will brave the elements with their cameras to learn about getting the perfect nature shot.

Officials remind those who want to participate to bring their camera and to dress for the cold outdoors.
